Dental Implants

Dr. Paul Bernstein of Bernstein Dental Care replaces teeth and restores patient smiles with dental implants. Implants are a permanent restorative option for teeth that are missing or have been extracted.  They look and feel like natural teeth, and are the most permanent and efficient means of replacing lost teeth. Implants are titanium screws inserted into the jaw bone. Over a period of 3-6 months, the jaw bone heals around the implant to become a solid, stable base for the new tooth. During this time a patient is fitted with a temporary crown, and a custom crown is created to match their smile perfectly. After the jaw bone and gums have healed appropriately, the custom crown is placed in a second appointment. Sometimes, the doctor may need to expose the head of the implant in a second minor surgery.  When everything is healed, the crown will be screwed or cemented to the top of the implant.  When this is complete the tooth looks like part of the natural smile, and with proper care wil...

The Purpose of Dental Bonding

Dr. Paul Bernstein of Bernstein Dental Care utilizes dental bonding to repair teeth that have been chipped, cracked, or fractured. It is also used to improve the appearance of discolored teeth, to change the shape of teeth, and to fill cavities that have been caused by tooth decay. Dental bonding is considered a cosmetic service, but has restorative properties as well because it protects teeth and keeps them strong. Dental bonding earned its name because it bonds to the tooth. To place it, Dr. Bernstein will apply the composite material, sculpt the tooth into its proper shape, harden the composite with a light and then polish it for a final finish. Dental bonding isn’t painful and requires no anesthesia unless the patient suffers from anxiety and/or tooth sensitivity. If you wish to improve your smile with cosmetic services, schedule a consultation to see if dental bonding is right for you. If you have questions or concerns regarding dental bonding or cosmetic dental services, please g...

Different Types of Dentures

Though we’d like to keep our permanent teeth for a lifetime, things don’t always go as planned. Teeth can go missing because of dental decay or trauma to the mouth, but the good news is that Dr. Paul Bernstein of Bernstein Dental Care can provide patients with a replacement. Dentures are an excellent and cost-efficient way to restore missing teeth and there are two types that Dr. Bernstein may suggest. Complete (full) dentures are used if you’re missing teeth in your upper (maxillary) or lower (mandibular) jaws. Partial dentures are used on patients who only have some teeth missing on either jaw. Complete dentures replace all of the teeth, while partial dentures fill in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevent other teeth from shifting position. It’s normal for dentures to feel awkward at first, but you will eventually get used to the mouthfeel. If you have questions or concerns regarding missing teeth, dentures, or restorative dental services, please give us a call. To learn ab...

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to protect it as well as restore its shape and size, strength and improves its appearance. If Dr. Paul Bernstein of Bernstein Dental Care suggests a crown, it is probably to restore a tooth from a large filling, root canal, or cracked tooth syndrome. Permanent crowns can be made from many materials and Dr. Bernstein will discuss them with you during your consultation. A crown can help strengthen a tooth with a large filling when there aren’t enough pieces of the tooth remaining to hold a filling. Crowns can also be used to attach dental bridges when those are needed. Additionally, a crown can protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore one that’s already broken. A crown is a good way to cover teeth that are discolored or badly shaped. There are several types of materials that can be used for dental crowns, which Dr. Paul Bernstein will discuss with you during your consultation. If you have questions or concerns regardin...

Dental Bridges

If you have teeth that are missing or widely spaced, dental bridges are one of the most cost-effective ways to fix the problem. Dental bridges seal the gap that has been created by one or more missing teeth. Dr. Paul Bernstein of Bernstein Dental Care utilizes dental bridges to not only restore your smile but also restore the self-esteem that may have been lost. Bridges can help restore the ability to properly chew and speak as well as distribute the forces in your bite by replacing missing teeth. There are different types of dental bridges available, and during a consultation, Dr. Paul Bernstein will let you know what your options are. In addition to restoring the appearance of your smile, dental bridges can improve a tooth’s appearance, shape, and help a person maintain their shape of the face. Dental Implants as a Tooth Replacement Option

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. At Bernstein Dental Care, the dental implant procedure is a team effort between you and Dr. Paul Bernstein. Allow us to explain the process. The process of getting implants requires a number of visits over several months. X-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself for up to six months. Depending on the type of implant, a second surgery may be required in order to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place. With other implants, the post and anchor are already attached and placed at the same time. If you are concerned about...
