April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Dr. Paul Bernstein of Bernstein Dental celebrates National Oral Cancer Awareness Month to educate patients on the benefits of oral cancer screening during a dental appointment. The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify symptoms of mouth cancer at an early stage when there is a greater chance for a cure. During your next dental appointment, don’t hesitate to ask about oral cancer screening.


It’s important to know that just because Dr. Paul Bernstein suggests an oral cancer screening, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have cancer, he just wants to take preventive measures. People who have a high risk of oral cancer may benefit more, but factors that increase a patient’s risk of oral cancer include tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, and/or history of significant sun exposure.

Dental Avulsion - Traumatic Tooth Loss

During the summer, people tend to be more active outdoors and may be at greater risk for dental injuries. While nobody ever plans to get a tooth knocked out, we at Bernstein Dental Care thought it would be a good idea to remind our patients of what steps they can take during a dental emergency to have the best chance of preserving their teeth. When a tooth is knocked out entirely, we call that a “dental avulsion.” The tooth should be lifted by its crown, never its root. There are American Dental Association-approved tooth transport containers that will hopefully be available in a nearby first aid kit, but if not, the tooth should be rinsed with a saline solution. It should then be reinserted into the empty socket, with care to ensure it is facing the right way. Smoking with Sleep Apnea
