Acid Reflux
One of the most common causes of toothaches and discoloration we see in adults is acid reflux. While we at Bernstein Dental Care in Brooklyn provide patients with first-rate treatments for their weakened enamel, it is important for people to understand the consequences of this disease and how to prevent it.
Our stomach acid is highly corrosive, which is why we’re in trouble if it leaves the stomach. In people with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), the sphincter separating the stomach from the esophagus frequently fails to close, allowing acid into the esophagus and mouth. Along the way, it causes a painful sensation misleadingly called heartburn. Repeated exposure to stomach acid dissolves tooth enamel, and it’s usually the upper molars which suffer the most exposure. Gradually, their cusps wear down, and they take on a glazed appearance before cracking.
Acid reflux is a serious medical condition but it can usually be combatted with lifestyle changes. Patients are advised to avoid eating before lying down and to cut back on alcohol, smoking, citrus acid, fat, and onions and garlic. Enamel cannot be regrown, but it can be reinforced with fluoride treatments and replaced with partial crowns.
