Dry Sockets

We do everything we can at Bernstein Dental Care to save our patients’ teeth, but when they have to be extracted, we do it efficiently and with maximum care for the patient’s comfort. While not done lightly, extractions are a routine procedure and very rarely lead to complications. When something does go wrong, it’s usually a dry socket, which we endeavor to educate patients on how to prevent. After a tooth is pulled, a bit of blood will pool in the empty socket. This blood will ideally form a clot, which will protect the socket from dryness and infection while it closes. However, there are some medications which prevent blood from clotting, which is why it’s very important for patients to share their medication history with us. A successful clot could still be dislodged by suction, which is why patients shouldn’t suck on straws after surgery. If they are in severe pain more than two days after the extraction, they should come see us for painkillers, antibiotics, and moisturizing medic

Acid Reflux

One of the most common causes of toothaches and discoloration we see in adults is acid reflux. While we at Bernstein Dental Care in Brooklyn provide patients with first-rate treatments for their weakened enamel, it is important for people to understand the consequences of this disease and how to prevent it. Our stomach acid is highly corrosive, which is why we’re in trouble if it leaves the stomach. In people with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), the sphincter separating the stomach from the esophagus frequently fails to close, allowing acid into the esophagus and mouth. Along the way, it causes a painful sensation misleadingly called heartburn. Repeated exposure to stomach acid dissolves tooth enamel, and it’s usually the upper molars which suffer the most exposure. Gradually, their cusps wear down, and they take on a glazed appearance before cracking. Acid reflux is a serious medical condition but it can usually be combatted with lifestyle changes. Patients are advised to avoi

Endodontics: Root Canal

If you’ve been told by your dentist that you need a root canal, you’d probably rather run for the hills. Though the term, “root canal” is frightening, modern dental technology has made an ancient procedure nearly painless. Dr. Paul Bernstein of Bernstein Dental Care wants to ensure you that if your tooth needs to be repaired you’ll be back to eating, speaking, and chewing in no time. A root canal is necessary to treat a tooth that is decayed, inflamed, infected, or dead. The process involves opening the root of the tooth and removing the dead tissue. When the root canal is treated and the infected pulp of the tooth has been removed, the tooth will be sealed to prevent bacteria from entering. The result is a freshly revived, healthy tooth.   If you have questions or concerns about the root canal process, please give us a call.
