Temporomandibular Joint Disorder: TMJ

When you eat, do you notice a clicking or a popping sound in your jaw? This is a symptom of a temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMJ. While there is no single cure for this condition, there are treatment options that Dr. Paul Bernstein of Bernstein Dental Care can discuss once you’ve been diagnosed. Allow us to explain more about TMJ.

The temporomandibular joints are the joints that make it possible to open and close your mouth. Located on each side of the head, your TMJ work together when you chew, speak, or swallow and help you eat and speak. There is no exact cause for TMJ, but studies show that possible causes include arthritis, dislocation, or malocclusion (misalignment). Dr. Paul Bernstein may suggest sleeping with a night guard to avoid teeth grinding that can irritate the problem. In some cases, he may even suggest fixing an uneven bite.
