Mouth guards are designed to prevent structural damage to your teeth and jaw during contact sports. Our doctors at Bernstein Dental Care, LLC encourages our patients who play contact sports to wear mouth guards. Studies have shown mouth guards to decrease the risk of concussions and increase your safety while playing sports.


There are a couple of ways you can purchase mouth guards for yourself or your children. Most sporting goods stores sell mouth guards but they don’t fit custom to your mouth. These mouth guards are generally one size fits all or on a small, medium, or large scale.


We advise our patients who are considering a mouth guard to make an appointment with your dentist. Custom mouth guards are the most comfortable and offer the most protection for your mouth. Custom mouth guards will allow you to breathe easy and talk with no restrictions.

Dental Avulsion - Traumatic Tooth Loss

During the summer, people tend to be more active outdoors and may be at greater risk for dental injuries. While nobody ever plans to get a tooth knocked out, we at Bernstein Dental Care thought it would be a good idea to remind our patients of what steps they can take during a dental emergency to have the best chance of preserving their teeth. When a tooth is knocked out entirely, we call that a “dental avulsion.” The tooth should be lifted by its crown, never its root. There are American Dental Association-approved tooth transport containers that will hopefully be available in a nearby first aid kit, but if not, the tooth should be rinsed with a saline solution. It should then be reinserted into the empty socket, with care to ensure it is facing the right way.
